Teaching Pedagogy

Teaching pedagogy at Bhavan is a mix of classroom learning, learning aids, group learning, case study and non-classroom activities.

Classroom Learning is primarily meant for theoretical and conceptual inputs. Faculty from diverse areas of specializations and corporate heads are frequently invited to interact with the students. Books and periodicals from national and international sources complement classroom lectures. Emphasis is laid on use of audio visual aids and software packages.

A prominent constituent of the teaching methodology is Group Learning, which is based on the fact that peer group learning is very effective. It prepares prospective managers to be proactive in seeking and acquiring knowledge, rather than having it “imparted” in the classroom. Free exchange of ideas among members of each group through discussion and presentation not only leverages on time and effort, but also enhances communication skills besides inculcating the virtue of self-study.

Case studies generally use in classroom interactions to expose the students to real life issues of business problems. The decision making under ‘real life’ conditions imparts that managerial skills in the students keeping them to develop beyond not confined to any theory only. The summer project which forms a part of the curriculum gives the students the opportunity to work in the industry for 6-8 weeks or more.

Communication Lab

Communication is mediated through language be it verbal or non-verbal. And language is a combination of ‘what’ and ‘how’ and is context-bound. In the present scenario good communication skills is an indispensable part of fulfilling one’s aspirations and dreams. English language, in particular, has become essential in the lives of young aspirants as much as for the professionals, who aspire to advance their careers anywhere in the world.

Language learning is not the same as learning any other subject. It is not confined to one way communication. It is mandatorily active participation of the learners. With particular reference to the Second Language learners of English (English for specific purposes) and more prominently for the rural and semi-urban learners the honing of communication skills pose a serious challenge. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing (LSRW) needs continuous practice for improvement. Being able to communicate well is the most important factor when seeking a placement in a Company or pursuing higher education in reputed Institutions. The language laboratory plays an important role in the language learning process.

A laboratory for language learning is something new to Indian students, whereas it is very common in Western countries to train children in the laboratory to enrich their language learning experiences. The language teachers provides students with the technical tools to assist learners in the acquisition and maintenance of aural comprehension, oral and written proficiency and balance the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of language in today’s concept of global village. A well-equipped language laboratory was set up in 2017. Our Language Laboratory provides learners with ODLL - Orell Digital Language Lab and is furnished with high definition speakers, goose neck microphones for each learners, Lapel Collar clips and over head phones (capacity of 30 learners at a time) , a digital board all operating under modern energy efficient LED lighting system and a Teacher console set in a workshop mode seating arrangement.

The onus of English language enhancement among learners lies with the Institution and we at BIMS, Kolkata have made arrangements to set-up a Digital Language Lab for the use of its learners to provide the learners with a strong platform for practical training in the language.

The learners are exposed to functional language in use and are familiarized with the many pronunciation styles that are vital in everyday usage of the English language in today’s world.
